Life Insurance for Smokers in Ontario

Nicotine use is one of the few factors that consistently changes life insurance pricing across the market. What is less consistent is how each insurer defines a smoker — and that definition is where real money is won or lost.

Definitions vary more than people expect

Because definitions are set by each insurer, the same person can be quoted at smoker rates by one carrier and non-smoker rates by another. Comparing definitions is part of the work, not a detail.

UseHow it is often treatedNotes
CigarettesSmoker rates at essentially every insurerLook-back periods commonly run twelve months or longer
Vaping with nicotineUsually nicotine use; commonly smoker ratesSome insurers are more accommodating than others
Occasional cigarsVaries; some insurers allow non-smoker rates within limitsDepends on frequency and the insurer's declaration
CannabisAssessed separately; depends on frequency and methodNicotine-free cannabis use is treated differently by some insurers

What insurers may consider

  • What you use, how often and for how long
  • The date of last use and the insurer's look-back period
  • Whether nicotine is involved at all
  • Related conditions such as respiratory or cardiovascular history
  • Age, coverage amount and other lifestyle factors

Testing and disclosure

Depending on the insurer, age and amount, a paramedical exam with a urine or blood sample may be requested, and nicotine testing is common. Declaring accurately is essential — a discrepancy between a declaration and test results can result in a rescinded offer and can affect a future claim.

There is no advantage to guessing. If you are unsure whether your use falls inside an insurer's definition, ask before the application is submitted.

If you are planning to quit

Whether reconsideration is offered, and what evidence is required, is set by the insurer and the contract. Nothing here guarantees a rate change.

  • Coverage today at smoker rates is generally better than no coverage while waiting
  • Many insurers consider reconsideration after a documented nicotine-free period
  • Convertible term can preserve future options while your situation changes
  • Re-shopping the market after the required period may also be worthwhile

Screening is not an underwriting decision

A preliminary broker screening helps identify which definitions and insurers suit your situation. It does not approve coverage, assign a smoker or non-smoker class, or guarantee a premium.

Final decisions are made by the insurer after reviewing a complete application, subject to underwriting and individual circumstances.

Common questions

How much more do smokers pay?

Smoker pricing is typically meaningfully higher than non-smoker pricing for the same coverage, but the difference varies by insurer, age, amount and product. Only an illustration for your own profile shows a realistic figure.

Does vaping count as smoking?

Most Canadian insurers treat nicotine vaping as nicotine use, and many apply smoker rates. Definitions differ between insurers, so the application wording and the contract definition are what matter.

What about cannabis?

Cannabis is assessed separately from tobacco by many insurers, and the treatment depends on frequency, method of consumption and whether nicotine is involved. Some insurers offer non-smoker rates to occasional users; this varies by carrier.

How long after quitting can I get non-smoker rates?

Many insurers require a period of being nicotine-free, commonly twelve months, before considering non-smoker rates, and some look for longer. Requirements and any testing are set by the insurer.

Can my rate be changed after the policy is issued?

Some insurers will consider a reconsideration request after a documented nicotine-free period, which may involve a new declaration and testing. Availability depends on the insurer and the contract.
