Universal Life Insurance

Universal life insurance in Ontario

Permanent coverage with a separate policy account and a lot of flexibility — which also means more moving parts to monitor.

Two parts in one contract

A universal life policy combines permanent life insurance with a policy account. Premiums you pay go into the account; the insurer deducts the cost of insurance and administration charges from it; whatever remains stays invested according to the options you selected.

That separation is what creates both the flexibility and the responsibility that come with the product.

Flexibility

  • Premiums can often be varied within limits set by the contract and tax rules
  • Death benefit structures may be level or may include the account value, depending on the option chosen
  • Cost of insurance is usually selectable as level or increasing at issue
  • Investment options can typically be changed over time within the plans the insurer offers

Costs to understand

Universal life charges are itemized rather than bundled. Expect an ongoing cost of insurance that varies with age and structure, administration or policy fees, and investment management costs on the account options you select. Some contracts also apply surrender charges in the early years.

Because the charges are visible, a universal life illustration should be read line by line rather than by its headline value.

Policy sustainability and risk

The policy stays in force as long as the account can absorb the charges or you keep funding it. If returns are lower than illustrated, or if planned deposits are skipped, the account can be depleted and the policy can lapse — potentially at an age when replacing coverage is expensive or not possible.

This is the single most important difference between universal life and a guaranteed level-premium whole life design, and it is why periodic in-force reviews matter.

Investment choices

Insurers typically offer a range of options such as daily interest, guaranteed interest accounts with fixed terms, and index- or fund-linked accounts. Guaranteed options provide certainty at a lower expected return; market-linked options carry the potential for higher or negative results.

Investment performance is never guaranteed unless you are using a contractually guaranteed interest option, and even then only on the terms stated in the contract.

Tax considerations, at a high level

Life insurance policies in Canada that remain within prescribed limits generally allow the policy account to accumulate on a tax-advantaged basis, and a death benefit paid to a named beneficiary is generally received tax-free. Withdrawals, policy loans and surrenders can create taxable amounts.

Tax rules are detailed and change over time. Confirm any tax strategy with a qualified tax professional before relying on it.

Common questions

Is the investment growth in a universal life policy guaranteed?

No. Unless you select a guaranteed interest option offered by the insurer, policy account results depend on the investment options chosen and can be negative. Illustrations use assumed rates and are not predictions.

Can a universal life policy lapse?

Yes. If the policy account cannot cover the insurance and administration charges and premiums are not increased, the policy can lapse. Reviewing the policy periodically is important to keep it sustainable.

Who typically considers universal life?

It is often considered by people who want permanent coverage with premium flexibility, and by business owners or higher-income households using it within a broader tax and estate plan. Suitability should be assessed individually.
